It is a charitable mental hospital run by the Congregation of Teresian Carmelites (CTC). The Teresian Carmelites is a community of consecrated men, women and laity who have found their "spiritual homeland" in the Carmelite Charism. The Carmelite Charism means that it was "born of the Spirit for the good of all and must once again be placed at the center of the Church, open to communion and participation by all the People of God." (Blessed John Paul II, Starting Afresh from Christ). The Carmelite Charism educates Christians to move towards the deepest depth of their own heart (where God himself dwells) in order to discover by this interior journey the depths of God's heart, the depth of every human being's heart, and the depths of the events of all reality. Learning at the feet of the great Carmelite Saints and Doctors of the Church, Sts. Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Therese of Lisieux, Elizabeth of the Trinity and Edith Stein, we hope to reach the universal call to holiness which was proclaimed at the Second Vatican Council.

Our Carmelite community desires to put the Carmelite charism in 'movement' so that it can become the pedagogical (teaching) criterion of its faith, Christian friendship, culture and mission. In this way we can build a 'family of families'–organically and authoritatively guided-in which every state of life has its own role and recognition, so that each person will be helped to accomplish his/her own vocation, but with constant attention to realizing the 'movement of love' that comes from God, extending itself up to our neighbors and the whole world.
